On Wednesday, Ian found a dead hedgehog:

“Returning to the car park, towards the bottom of Simpson’s Field, I came across a dead hedgehog. It had been eviscerated, so most likely was killed and eaten by a badger. This is the first evidence of hedgehogs in the reserve since 2014.”

Here is a link to a recent post about the complicated relationship between hedgehogs and badgers.

    1. Sad for the hedgehog but not for our thriving badger sett. I think we are too much inclined to take sides with the prey rather than the predator. Perhaps we spent too much of our prehistory being prey rather than predator: our hindbrain’s underlying message is “Run!”

      1. I’m sad because I have never seen a hedge hog… Like ever.

Oh I’m all for badgers, too! It is also sad that some people actually cull them or demonise them.

Not taking sides. I was watching Spring Watch and felt sad when the jay predated the small birds, but that’s just nature. I understand that it is just what it is 👍

        1. I can’t tell you how sad I am that you have never seen a hedgehog: such a dreadful commentary on our times. I am old now and, because I suspect you are not, I feel such guilt that we didn’t take care of the hedgehogs that were so common when I was young.

          1. I turned 40 today, but came to the UK in 2010. No hedgehogs where I am from.

I first heard of a hedgehog as a kid from on of Beatrix Potter’s books. Then, I saw them in photographs and on the television. Beautiful little things.

I still am hoping to see a hedgehog one day.. Fingers crossed 🤞
