It’s Hedgehog Awareness Week.
The latest research has shown that, while rural hedgehog numbers are still falling, in urban areas numbers are finally beginning to rise. Here is a video to help you make your garden hedgehog friendly and keep those numbers rising.
If you see a hedgehog, please record the sighting on the BIG Hedgehog Map; the more information we have about the species, the more we can help.

❤️💜❤️ hedgehogs
Research has shown that it takes several urban gardens to support a hedgehog, so persuading friends, neighbours or even total strangers, to put a hedgehog door in their fence could be your Good Deed for Hedgehog Week, hardytardy!
I’ve been talking to someone at work about it. She has plans to put one in her fence! Yay!
A Gold Star from the hedgehogs!
I live in a block of flats, and I can’t even sow seeds in the communal garden, so my garden is made up of pots, but I have strawberries, a cherry tree, blue tomatoes, different flowers, and now some lettuce.
People who are running the place do not even allow us to put bird feeders up without kicking off. They also have gardeners come regularly to murder the lawn.
One day, we’ll have our own place with a big garden where wildlife will be welcome! Especially the hedgehogs!
How about a tenants’ group demanding some eco-gardening around your block of flats? A little activism?
I’d be searching for it. I’ve done the big garden bird watch, but our area had been disappointing. I shall be sprinkling wild flower seeds everywhere in protest! I think more small birds and some butterflies and bees are coming now because of the plants I’ve planted 😊 little successes for the wild life!
Well done!
What a cute little face!
Hedgehogs are the UK’s favourite mammal with more Google searches and Instagram hashtags than any other animal. It’s just such a shame that we can’t stop their overall numbers from declining.
