There are thirty two species of mammal on the reserve’s lists, thirteen of them bats

Nobody seems to be sure exactly how many mammal species there are in the UK, or even which species are native, but the Mammal Society, an organisation we are inclined to trust, says, “The British Isles are home to around 90 species of mammal in the land, air and sea.”

The yellow highlights mark the UK BAP Priority Species listed by the JNCC in 2024

Let’s go with that. It means that here, in the reserve, we have identified representatives of about a third of all the country’s mammalian species: pretty good. Here are some of them.
