A real mouthful of a name:

Xanthogramma pedissequum, the superb ant-hill hoverfly, a rarity spotted by Ian early on a spring morning in 2021 and added to our species list.

The adults are nectar feeders, one of the many species of hoverfly that feed on hogweed. Little is known of its larval stages but they have been found underground in the nests of the black garden ants (Lasius niger) and yellow meadow ants (Lasius flavus). They are believed to feed on ant-attended root aphids. The species overwinters safely underground as a larva.
