Check your dog after a walk

By David Feather

A newish hazard for dogs is Alabama Rot Disease which is caught from walking in muddy woody areas. Not a lot appears to be known about it, but it is a very dangerous disease that can lead to kidney failure.

As far as we are aware there are no cases relating to Southwick Country Park but we would like to stay clear of it and are anxious to help dog owners check and deal with potential cases quickly. As the Kennel Club advises, you should check your dog over regularly. In this case you are looking for skin lesions appearing as a distinct swelling, a patch of red skin or open and ulcer-like sores.

For more information go to the Vets4Pets webpage:

And may we wish you a Happy Walking New Year from the Friends of Southwick Country Park.

  1. There were a lot of cases in Wiltshire in 2018. Severnake Forest was the worst place for it but there have been cases in Chippenham and Salisbury as well.
