Lepidoptera is the name of the order that butterflies and moths belong to.

ONE: Butterflies and moths hear sounds through their wings


TWO: Lepidoptera wings are covered with thousands of tiny scales and hairs.

THREE: The order Lepidoptera has more than 180,000 species. They are 10% of all the described species of living organisms.

FOUR: Skippers get their name from their quick flight patterns. They are natural sprinters and some species can reach speeds f up to 37mph. They could keep pace with a racehorse!

FIVE: The painted lady completes a 9,000 mile journey from tropical Africa to the Arctic Circle. It takes up to six generations, each one spending their lives flying north.
