The gatekeeper (Pyronia tithonus) reported in last week’s butterfly transect has turned out to be a winner.

” It’s always good to see how the butterflies are faring at the various sites. Many species are experiencing a good season and some emerging very early. In fact your Gatekeeper is the first so far this year although not a county record “.
This very early gatekeeper was seen in Zone 6 of the transect: Simpson’s Field, the Arboretum and the little triangular field that has no name. Keep an eye out for it there; among our hundreds, if not thousands, of meadow browns, its bright orange colour will make it stand out. If you are lucky enough to get a photograph, we would love to see it.
