This week has see the return of our chiffchaffs!
Chiffchaffs are tiny birds, no bigger than a blue tit. Most, despite their size, migrate enormous distances overwintering in southern Europe or northern Africa and returning here in the spring to breed.
Because of our warming climate, an increasing number of birds now stay in Britain all year round but we don’t think we have had winter chiffchaffs in the reserve yet; we would have heard them. Their song, for which they are named, is a loud and monotonous chiff chaff: a very welcome sign that spring has arrived.
